It can be staggeringly hard to navigate the beauty industry and the thousands upon thousands of comedogenic ingredients used in skincare. What’s even harder is trying to figure out their comedogenic rating to see if those ingredients have the potential to clog your skin and cause breakouts.
There are at least 150 comedogenic ingredients (pore-clogging and acne-causing) commonly found in skincare, including products like hair care, cosmetics, bath and shower care, lotions, body sprays, etc, and a heck of a lot more. Basically, anything you buy at the store and put on your body in some way could have skin-clogging ingredients.
This is problematic for those of us already struggling with acne prone skin, as it means we must be extra diligent when choosing the products we use.
I have attempted to list as many common skincare ingredients as possible to help give you a leg up.
You'll be surprised about which ingredients will clog your pores and which don't.
The Ultimate List of Comedogenic Rating of 300+ Comedogenic Ingredients in Common Skincare Products
Finding out the comedogenic rating of skincare ingredients is a super painstaking and time-consuming process, especially when so much of what’s out there can cause acne.
I tend to gravitate towards a very simple skincare routine that uses very few ingredients so that I KNOW what the comedogenic rating is, along with quality.
However, if you’re curious about what may be lurking in the beauty care products you buy at the store, I’ve got you covered!
Also, if you want to know the comedogenic ratings of 80+ carrier oils and their respective benefits, check out my article HERE.
What is a Comedogenic Rating and What Does it Mean?
In the simplest terms, a comedogenic rating is a scale from 0-5 that tells you the likelihood of an ingredient clogging your pores in everyday skin care products.
The word "comedogenic" describes the ability of an ingredient (natural or man-made) to create blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.
- A rating of zero means that an ingredient will not clog your pores.
- A rating of 1 means that there is little chance of an ingredient clogging your pores.
- A rating of 2 means that it’s possible an ingredient can clog your pores.
- A rating of 3 means that an ingredient is likely to clog your pores.
- A rating of 4 means that an ingredient is very likely to clog your pores.
- And a rating of 5 means that an ingredient will definitely clog your pores.
I generally go with ingredients that are rated 0-2 as they’re the least likely to give my skin issues.
However, remember that a low rating doesn’t always constitute “healthiness” or the safety of that ingredient.
Many skincare products (especially makeup and other cosmetics) today contain a slew of unhealthy ingredients that may not clog your pores or cause irritation or inflammation yet still cause harm.
The Comedogenic Rating of 300+ Skin Care Ingredients
Looking closer into your skincare ingredients will help prevent comedones (clogged pores like blackheads and whiteheads) from forming.
Of course, other factors come into play when it comes to having clear skin, like the makeup you use, your cleanser and how well it removes pollutants and impurities, your skin's natural oils, and the rate at which your skin cells turnover and shed evenly.
Noncomedogenic skincare uses ingredients with a low risk of clogging pores. However, it's important to note that switching to non comedogenic products won't always be the ultimate fix people are looking for when treating their acne.
On top of that, the term "non-comedogenic" is not regulated in the skincare industry, so you will never know if a product can clog your pores until you look into the ingredients of the skincare, hair care, and cosmetics, you use.
The list below will give you a really good starting point.
Anything with a 0-2 should be safe enough to use on acne-prone skin without worsening your acne.
However, if you are still experiencing breakouts, I suggest finding products with even lower comedogenic ratings while supporting your skin's health.
Having said all of that, let's get into 300+ comedogenic ingredients and their ratings!
Alcohol, Esters, Ethers, & Sugars
Alcohols are commonly used as solvents in skincare products to help dissolve other ingredients. They can also act as astringents to reduce the appearance of pores on the skin.
However, certain types of alcohol, such as Denatured Alcohol and Isopropyl Alcohol, can dry and irritate the skin.
Esters are generally less irritating than alcohols and have emollient properties that can help to moisturize the skin. Examples of esters found in skincare products include jojoba esters and polymethyl methacrylate cross polymers (PMMC).
Ethers are commonly used as thickeners or emulsifiers in skin care formulations to help stabilize creams and lotions.
Examples of ethers found in skincare products include polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivatives.
Sugars are important humectants that help keep the skin hydrated by drawing water from the environment into the skin. These molecules can also be used to improve a product’s texture, making it feel more luxurious on the skin.
Examples of sugars found in skincare products include hyaluronic acid and trehalose.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants are compounds that help protect the skin from free radical damage caused by environmental aggressors such as pollutants and UV rays before they cause oxidative stress on our cells, leading to visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation.
Antioxidants are commonly used in skincare products such as serums, moisturizers, cleansers, and masks.
Some examples of antioxidant ingredients include Vitamin C, Vitamin E, green tea extract, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), niacinamide (Vitamin B3), ferulic acid, resveratrol, lycopene, and astaxanthin.

Fatty Acids and Derivatives
Fatty acids are made up of long-chain molecules that are essential for having healthy skin. They form a protective barrier on the skin which helps lock in moisture, protect against environmental aggressors such as pollutants and UV rays, and provide an anti-inflammatory effect.
Fatty acids that are used in skincare products include linoleic acid (omega 6), oleic acid (omega 9), palmitic acid, stearic acid, and lauric acid.
Derivatives of these fatty acids such as ceramides and phospholipids, are often added to skincare formulations to enhance skincare formulations.

Lanolins and Derivatives
Lanolins are waxy substances derived from sheep's wool that can be used in skincare products to help moisturize and protect the skin. They are often quite heavy and greasy feeling on the skin but can be incredibly healing for excessively dry areas.
Common lanolin derivatives include acetylated lanolins, ethoxylated lanolins, hydroxystearic acid esters of lanolin alcohols, and hydrogenated lanolin alcohols.

Lipids and Derivatives
Lipids are a group of naturally-occurring molecules that play an essential role in keeping our skin healthy by forming a protective barrier on the skin that locks in moisture.
Common lipids used in skin care products include fatty acids such as linoleic acid (omega 6), oleic acid (omega 9), palmitic acid, stearic acid, lauric acid, as well as derivatives such as ceramides and phospholipids.
These help improve skincare formulations' performance by providing better hydration, protection from environmental stressors, and assisting with the delivery of active ingredients.

Preservatives and Additives
Preservatives are used to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria, extend shelf life, and to help maintain product quality and freshness.
Synthetic preservatives such as parabens and phenoxyethanol are commonly found in many skincare products and cosmetics.
Natural preservatives like vitamin E, radish root extract, and rosemary extract also help preserve products without the potential of irritating skin.
Skincare products may also contain additives to enhance texture, provide fragrance or color.
Common additives include emollients (such as shea butter) which add moisture, humectants (like glycerin and hyaluronic acid) which attract water molecules to the skin's surface; and exfoliants for sloughing off dead skin cells.

Sterols
Sterols are plant-derived compounds found in various skincare products that act as emollients, meaning they help hydrate and soften the skin.
Sterols also possess antioxidant properties, providing protection against environmental damage.
Sterols contain fatty acids that help lock in moisture and keep the skin barrier strong and healthy. They also help to reduce inflammation by inhibiting enzymes that cause inflammation. This helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines while improving overall skin texture and tone.

Thickeners and Emulsifiers
Thickeners help to increase the viscosity of formulations, making them more spreadable and easier to apply.
Commonly used thickeners include xanthan gum, carbomer, cellulose, polyacrylamides, silicones and polymers.
Emulsifiers are used to bind oil and water together in a formulation, which helps enhance the absorption of active ingredients like vitamins and antioxidants into the skin for maximum benefit.
Commonly used emulsifiers include cetearyl alcohol, stearic acid, polysorbates, lecithin and glyceryl stearate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Comedogenic Ingredients
What are comedogenic ingredients?
Comedogenic ingredients are substances that are known to produce an occlusive barrier on the skin's surface that traps sebum and dirt in the pores, leading to bacterial overgrowth. The resulting buildup of dead skin cells, sebum, and residual skincare product ingredients can clog pores and promote the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.
Examples of comedogenic ingredients include coconut oil, cocoa butter, isopropyl palmitate, and wheat germ oil.
Is vaseline Comedogenic?
Vaseline is not considered to be a comedogenic ingredient, meaning it will not clog pores or promote the formation of acne.
However, many people find that Vaseline can still cause breakouts in individuals with sensitive skin. This is because the thick consistency of Vaseline creates an occlusive layer on the surface of the skin that can trap dirt, bacteria, and oil in the pores.
How do I know if a product is comedogenic?
Knowing if a product is comedogenic or not can be tricky, as this depends on the concentration of the comedogenic ingredients that are present in the product.
What are comedogenic skincare products?
Comedogenic skincare products are those that contain ingredients that can clog pores and lead to the formation of acne.
These types of products should be avoided if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, as they can worsen existing breakouts and can lead to new ones.
Are comedogenic ingredients bad?
Comedogenic ingredients can be bad for your skin if you are prone to breakouts, as they can clog pores and lead to the formation of acne.
What is non-comedogenic?
Non-comedogenic products are those that do not contain ingredients that clog pores and lead to the formation of acne. These products are often labeled as non-comedogenic or oil-free, and they are a great option for those with sensitive or breakout-prone skin.
How do I know if a product is comedogenic?
You can identify whether or not a product contains comedogenic ingredients by reading the label and looking up reviews online. Generally, products that contain certain oils, such as coconut, peanut, avocado, and cocoa butter, may be comedogenic.
Some ingredients, such as lanolin, mineral oil, and stearic acid, are comedogenic.
This is why it's a good idea to look at reviews online for more information about specific products before using them.
