Whether we like it or not, fungus lives just about everywhere both in our homes and outdoors. In fact, fungus even lives on us! Most of the time it’s harmless, but given the right circumstances, fungus can easily get out of control if left on its own causing symptoms like inflammation, pain, itching, yucky smells, and an impaired immune system. Fighting fungus naturally is thankfully, very easy to do if you know what type of infection you're dealing with.
Some of the most common fungal infections one might experience in their lifetime include:
• Vaginal yeast infections
• Athlete’s foot
• Toenail fungus
• Jock itch
Plus a number of other unpleasant fungal related ailments that can happen pretty much anywhere on the body, even in the ears!
The truth is, I could go over each individually but I’d rather not have to delve into too much detail here. There is plenty of fungus among us. Just know that there are a number of tried and true natural remedies that work for ALL manner of fungal infections and those are the ones I will be going over.
Fungus Infection Remedy Know How
Here's a few tips and tricks to help you get started with curing that fungus!
1. Mix Those Herbs!
Singular antifungal herbs will work just fine, but mixing several together or alternating different herbs will make them even more effective.
Some of the most potent antifungal herbs also happen to be in most people’s kitchen or bathroom cabinet so there’s no excuse to let fungus get out of hand. Let’s be honest, it isn’t going to go away of its own accord. In fact, I’ve seen one person with nail fungus on their hands for as long as I can remember. What was the issue? They weren’t consistent with treatment.
2. Consistency, consistency, consistency!
Even if you think the fungus is gone because you can’t see it anymore doesn’t mean you’re fungus free. Yeast is microscopic, so unless you have been consistently treating the area for a few weeks after you “don’t see it anymore”, chances are it’s still there. Applying treatment morning and night for up to 8 weeks is recommended for most fungal infections especially nail fungus.
3. Cleanliness
Keeping the area clean and reasonably dry is key to helping herbal treatments work their best. Not changing your socks isn’t going to help the situation if you have athlete’s foot. You want to create an environment that’s inhospitable. be sure to throw out the source that's causing your fungus troubles like dirty or overly tight shoes, old socks, and other things/items that may be making the issue worse.
Also, if you use certain body care products, make sure that there isn't any sugar in the ingredients. One major reason women get yeast infections after intercourse is due to using conventional lubricants. They're FULL of sugar that feed yeasts and bacteria. Throw them out and consider making your own.
Fungus Infection Remedy - The Herbs!
Now that you’re familiar with how to treat fungal infections for best results, it’s now on to the herbs. Why herbs? From my own personal experience a lot of conventional anti-fungal creams and medications just didn’t work all that well not to mention they often caused some weird side effects. I turned to herbs and guess what? They worked! That weird skin blotch on my stomach is GONE after having it for almost 3 years. I almost miss it...no not really!
Tea Tree
One of the most powerful antiseptics known tea tree also boasts some impressive antifungal properties.
Tea tree essential oil in particular is amazing for nail and skin fungus, even vaginitis though it should be WELL diluted for this specific application. In fact, tea tree oil should always be diluted as it can be quite irritating to the skin. I like this brand for killing nail fungus.
You can also find the highest quality tea tree essential oil here.
To Use
Dilute 10 drops of tea tree oil in 1 TB of carrier oil (like sweet almond, coconut, grape seed oil, etc) and apply to the affected area using a Q-tip or cotton ball 2-3 times per day.
Garlic
A close rival to tea tree oil, garlic is one of our BEST antifungals. Taking 5-6 teaspoons of garlic extract a day has been shown to be effective against candida.
Applying garlic extract externally is also incredibly effective especially when used both externally and internally 2-3 times per day for best results. You might smell a bit like garlic, but you'll be fungus free.
I like this garlic extract and use it for its immune enhancing benefits.
To make your own, simply blend up some fresh garlic cloves and applying the mixture directly to affected nails avoiding the skin. Garlic is quite spicy! If the infection is on the skin, mixing it in equal parts raw honey will feel more comfortable.
Licorice Root
Licorice root has an impressive 25 antifungal compounds!
To use it, simply make a strong tea by decocting 1 heaping TB licorice root in 1 ½ cups of water or by steeping one bag of licorice root tea in a large mug. Once the tea has cooled enough, soak the affected area for 10-15 minutes twice a day. You can also use a clean cotton ball to blot the area 1-3 times a day for best results.
Black Walnut
Not only great for ridding the body of unwanted parasites, black walnut is also an effective anti-fungal. Most often black walnut it is used as a tincture directly applied with clean cotton balls to the affected area, but you can certainly use it topically as a tea.
Its formidable anti-fungal properties have helped get rid of even the nastiest infections with consistent use. Paired with tea tree oil, this remedy is nigh unstoppable.
Black Walnut and Tea Tree Fungal Solution
• 1oz black walnut tincture (I like this brand)
• 10 drops tea tree oil
To Use
Shake the mixture well and apply it directly to non-genital fungal infections (it’s a bit too strong for this unless you use less tea tree).
Apply this mixture 2-3 times per day.
Chamomile
This is definitely the most pleasant option for treating all type of fungal infections. Chamomile is known to be especially good at ridding the body of candida overgrowth. Simply drinking a strong cup of chamomile tea 2-3 times per day AND applying the used tea bags externally to the infection will work wonders!
This is my favorite chamomile tea.
You can also use chamomile tincture.

Pau D’arco
This is another herb that tastes pleasant but don’t be fooled by its light vanilla flavor, pau D’arco is one of the best fungicidals available. Most often used for candida and other yeast infections this herb is also great used topically for nail fungus.
To Use
Steep a strong cup of Pau D’arco tea and soak the affected area either directly or with drenched cotton balls 2-3 times per day.

Turmeric
Lemongrass
Henna
Goldenseal

I also wanted to ask you about black seed oil for using it topically to treat fungus on scalp. I just read a lot of positive things about it. As you recommended I started using tea tree oil and coconut oil. My naturopath is ok with that. Her nr1 remedy is ACV. Other than that her approach is to be on an anti fungal diet and wait for the results. I feel like I need to do more than that. My scalp is itchy, very shiny and now my daughter is having the same problem. Can you please suggest the fastest remedy? Would black seed oil work better than tea tree oil? How often should we use it? I would really appreciate your help.Thank you so much!!!

I have shiny patches all over my scalp. There is some itching, but it goes away after I apply coconut oil on my scalp. Is there any natural cuter for scalp fungus? How long will it take to go away? I really don’t want to take any prescription medication. Thank you.

Hi Katrina!
Always make sure you are under the care of a professional 🙂 You may want to ask them about using diluted tea tree essential oil in some coconut oil to help. If used consistently, you can get rid of fungus in about 4-8 weeks.

Thank you so much Tash! I really appreciate your help! I’ll do that and let you know how it worked.

Thanks for the recipe. I'm going to give this a try. How long do you think it will take to cure nail fungus?

Hi Ashley!
It depends on the severity. Generally, you will want to treat the fungus up to 4 weeks after you think it's gone.

Is there a scalp type of fungus that would cause hair loss? if so what remedy would you recommend? It seemed I may have developed allergies and tinnitus due to hair products but after reading your blog I'm thinking now it may be a fungus. Does that make sound possible?
Tash says
The most common scalp fungus is dandruff! But I'm not sure if it would cause hair loss. Normally hair loss is largely caused by an internal imbalance like hormones, too much stress....etc. Fungus is capable of causing all kinds of strange things, it might be worth looking into. Do you have any type of dandruff symptoms?

My son had a terrible fungal diaper rash and I used a fungal cream which helped. But I feel like it's coming back and I would love to try the tea tree/grapeseed oil on him. I was wondering if Chamomile tea is ok for a 11-mth old?
Tash says
Hi Akshaya!
You can definitely use chamomile externally for your son! I would recommend applying the strong tea 2-3 times per day. The chamomile will also help soothe itching and redness 🙂
Akshaya says
Thanks! I will definitely try it out! 🙂
