If you know me then you know I love everything natural when it comes to secret women’s business, and I’ll try just about anything if it makes my life easier during that time of the month.
I’ve heard of Thinx before, but for some reason never looked into them further. That is until recently! Lately, I’ve been delving into simpler more minimalistic living that’s a bit more low impact on my wallet and the environment. Using pads and tampons and then having to throw them away and buy more the next month just didn’t sit well with me anymore. Not only was I exposing my body to harmful chemicals, I was also contributing to unnecessary waste.
That’s when I moved onto the Diva Cup and haven’t looked back since. Its ease of use and ability to keep me leak free for up to 12 hours was such a plus that I couldn’t imagine needing anything else for period control. That is until your flow is like Niagara Falls and even the menstrual cup can’t save you. You might be in the car, sitting in a meeting, on a date, or out with friends when suddenly you can just feel it and know you’re in trouble because you decided to forgo the panty liner.
That’s when Thinx comes in! It’s times like these when you need that extra reassurance so you can continue your day unfazed and not worry about leaks.
So What Are Thinx Exactly
Thinx were created by a group of powerful women who were on a mission to liberate us all from future period accidents. You know you have an embarrassing story or five! Not only that, there are over 100 million young girls who miss school because of their periods, and this is why Thinx were really created.
Pretty awesome right? Get awesome underwear AND help girls around the world stay in school.
Not only do Thinx look and feel just like underwear, they have period technology hidden within. No more raggedy pairs of undies reserved for period days! Now you can wear stylish undergarments that look and feel great.
Thinx are made using four thin layers of material that make them moisture wicking, anti-microbial, absorbent, and leak resistant. They’re also reusable!
You can see check out the video below to see how this works.
The top layer is moisture wicking and pulls liquid into the thin layers right beneath it. This moisture-wicking action leaves you feeling dry all day long.
The second layer is absorbent and anti-microbial.
The third layer is extra absorbent.
The fourth layer is leak resistant.
Types of Thinx
Currently, there are six different styles of Thinx that comes in nude or black to suit every woman’s needs and lifestyle.
Hiphugger
This is the most popular style of Thinx as it’s stylish, cute, and super absorbent. The hiphugger holds up to 2 regular tampons worth of blood and works as an excellent backup to menstrual cups and tampons on heavy days.
Hi-Waist
Another popular style, the Hi-Waist is well suited for medium flow days and can hold up to 1 ½ regular tampons worth of blood. They now make this in a 2 reg. tampons worth size.
Boyshort
This is an excellent gender neutral style that’s super comfy to wear. It holds 2 regular tampons worth of blood. Great for heavy days.
Sport
This is a cute style you can wear during sports or more active activities where you need a bit more movability. It holds 1 ½ regular tampons worth of blood. Great for medium flow days.
Cheeky
The cheeky style gives you a sexier look and feel. No more feeling like you have to wear period reserved undies! These hold 1 regular tampons worth of blood making it great for light flow days.
Thong
Yes! These come in a thong! Halleluiah! Now you can wear what you like without worrying about leaks on your nice lingerie. These hold ½ a regular tampons worth and are suitable for very light flow days.
#KNOWYOURFLOW
You know your flow best so it’s up to you to decide how to use your Thinx. Some can free flow and others can’t. But one thing is for certain, they WORK and are so much better as a back up to tampons, pads, panty liners, and cups. Plus, they look cute. What’s not to love?
How to Care for Thinx
You might be wondering how to wash your Thinx after use since they’re reusable. All you have to do is rinse them right after use and throw them in the wash on COLD. You can even wait until laundry day after you’ve rinsed them.
Never use fabric softener or bleach on your Thinx! Washing them with the rest of your clothing is fine and won’t result in any staining or discoloration.
My Thinx Review!
After learning about how awesome Thinx are and their mission, I just had to try them for myself. I contacted the company and was sent 3 pairs to try; Hiphugger, Sport, and Cheeky in the color nude. I chose the color nude so that I could wear them with any color outfit.
Day 1
I waited excitedly for the first day of my period (which has never happened before). Once the first day began I grabbed the hiphuggers and put them on. They felt so comfortable and regular movement felt normal, just like wearing regular underwear, but way cuter!
I decided to really go all in on this and chose not to use anything but the hiphuggers to test them out. Just so you know, my first day is like turning on the faucet. I have an incredibly heavy first day and can go through several super strength tampons or have to empty my menstrual cup several times.
I figured, what better way to test how these babies hold up? And to be honest, I was pretty impressed. They held up for a full 5 ½ hours before they showed any signs of “leaking”. They never leaked from the bottom, but only from the sides where the stitching is. I saw no sign of blood until the 5 ½ hour mark.
Overall that’s really not bad considered they’re meant for 2 REGULAR tampons worth. I normally need quite a few super plus tampons on the first day.
During use, I didn’t feel like I was wearing a pad at all. I felt dry and comfortable even when I noticed the stitching area become tinged with blood.
Overall, I think these babies did their job well. I hope that Thinx comes out with a pair that can hold super or super plus amounts of blood in the future.
Cleaning was also really easy, but might not be for the faint of heart. All I did was carefully rinse them in the bathroom sink, wrung them out, and tossed them in the laundry basket.
Day 2
On the second day I decided to try the Sport Thinx as my period really starts to lighten up after the first day. They looked cute and felt comfortable and I was easily able to do a workout while wearing them. I got another good 5 ½ hours before seeing any tinge at the seams but I really think this is due to me doing a somewhat rigorous workout. I imagine these would have lasted another hour or two.
Day 3
This is when things really start to lighten up for me and I can easily go 8-12 hours without having to worry about my menstrual cup. I decided to free flow once again while using the Cheeky Thinx and was pleasantly surprised that they lasted over 8 hours. They're super cute and you get a nice shape while wearing them. My husband was impressed!
Days 4-5
Since I only had 3 pairs of Thinx I didn’t have any that were clean and dry to wear for the last two days. In the future, I would like to pick up a few more of each style so I can easily swap them out as needed.
In Conclusion
I really love these and I hope they branch out for flows that require a bit more absorbency. Obviously, they’re not going to hold 4-6 super plus tampons worth of blood, but maybe one day we’ll get a few pairs that can hold at least one super tampons worth. I feel like these can easily last a full 24 hours if used as your backup source.
Although I can’t personally use these as my free flow method, I will definitely be using these as my backup method instead of pads or panty liners during my period. They’re stylish, comfortable, and they WORK.
The Pros
These are super cute and I love the detailing that was put into making these. They feel sturdy, have no unpleasant odor while using them, don't feel like your using a pad, and the stitching is strong and will last a long time with proper care. I also love that you can choose between nude or black colors. For the price, these feel worth it to me. I also like the idea of helping girls around the world stay in school when I purchase a pair of Thinx.
The Cons
If you have a really heavy period like I do then these will be better used as a backup to what you're already using. Also, in order to use these exclusively, you need to have several pairs on hand or you might run out in between washings! One other con for some people is the need for pre-washing these but I personally don't find this to be an issue.
