going no-poo

Wow. This has been an interesting 30 days to say the least! How have you fared? Did you get the luxurious locks you were hoping for? Or, are you still going through transition?

As for me, it's definitely the latter. As of this moment, my hair is greasy, waxy, and frizzy. It feels pretty dirty and it doesn't smell great unless I use the vinegar rinse with essential oils in it. So yeah, transition. Fun.

The No-Poo Method- One Month Results

Week 2

You can read about week one here and about the original mission the month here.

Monday- My hair continues to be pretty frizzy starting 3 inches from the scalp. This is because those 3 inches are pretty oily. I really want to use a baking soda wash but I won't.
Tuesday- I still get my hair wet and comb it out in the shower. If I don't do this and try to comb it out of the shower, my hair gets a funny piece-y looking texture I don't like. I think It's because I don't use the baking soda wash on the rest of my hair. Too drying. I use this wide tooth comb.

Wednesday- Still going strong not washing my hair though I really want to. I find myself touching my scalp often because it feels gross. Used the vinegar rinse again while massaging my scalp. Hair is definitely oilier. Before showering brushed my hair with a boar bristle brush.

Thursday- Broke down and used the baking soda wash on the roots of my hair followed by the vinegar rinse. Afterward my hair was clean feeling and fresh! However, I am noticing a lot more hair falling out. It's not breakage because the hairs have the root. I don't know why this is happening.

Friday- My hair still looks clean but if I brush it it gets incredibly frizzy. I can only comb it in the shower.

Saturday- Washed my hair again with BS wash because my fiancé and I were going out.

Sunday- Only used the vinegar rinse today after working out. My hair felt dry and frizzy. Still losing more hair than usual.

Week 3

Monday->Thursday- I was able to keep from washing my hair but it doesn't seem like the oiliness is ebbing. My hair just keeps producing oil. I have noticed small breakouts on my neck where my hair touches the skin. I will sleep with my hair up from now on and make sure to change my pillowcase at least once a week.

Friday- Washed my roots with BS wash followed with vinegar rinse. It feels so good to have clean hair!

Saturday- My hair seemed to get oilier way faster. I ended up washing it again due to birthday parties and get-togethers.

Sunday- my hair still looks and feels pretty clean but the bulk of it feels a bit gummy. I'm beginning to wonder if it is because my hair is already dry and damaged from before? I can never use a brush to style it or it gets HUGE. I also expect that my hair feels this way because I don't use the boar bristle brush enough. I'll try to do better.

Week 4

Monday- Went without washing today. My scalp feels greasy/waxy but my hair doesn't look too bad if I wear it in a braid. Still frizzy as heck though and feels very dry. I actually ended up using a natural spray in conditioner on the ends but it didn't make a difference.

Tuesday- Ended up washing my hair with the BS wash because I thought I needed to go to the hospital and didn't want to look like a bum. I didn't go to the hospital btw.

Wednesday- My hair is still getting greasy pretty fast. I'm not sure there is a huge difference in how quickly it gets oily now compared to when I used shampoo. The main difference I see is more defined waves but no shine.

Thursday (Today!)- My hair feels pretty gross! I brushed it out with a boar bristle brush in put it up in a bun for when I work out later today. I might have to wash it before I go crazy.

My Overall Feeling Towards No-Poo?

As of right now I think it is still way too early to tell how my hair is going to turn out using the no-poo method. It's still very much in the transition stage and I think I may have washed it too many times this past month to really give it a chance to start producing less oil. You have to remember than my hair is VERY oily so not everyone will have the same experience as me.
The general feel of my hair (at least if I brush it or comb it out of the shower) is dry and frizzy. Also, the ends seem lighter than before. I had dyed it a long time ago but it seems like using the no-poo method has actually washed out the remnants of color. I can only guess that using the baking soda wash is bad for color treated hair.

My hair when finally dry also looks kind of piece-y and lacks shine. I know this is due to not brushing the oils through my hair often enough so I will definitely be working on being better about that. My ends are also generally dry and can very easily split due to the type of hair I have.

Overall my hair just feels yucky but I have to go through this in order to get to the desired end result which is gorgeous hair! So for now, I am going to keep going with the no-poo method another 30 days and see where I end up. I'll keep you all posted!

I may begin experimenting with other "shampoo" recipes to see if I can get my hair a bit more conditioned. I've tried argan oil and it hasn't worked unfortunately.

If you have been following along, how has your journey been?

Hi Tash! I ran across this post when I was searching for natural shampoo and ways to promote hair growth. I was wondering if you still "no-poo" or if you have moved on to another method? Also, how is the hair growth going? Thanks, Belinda
