DIY Rice Flour and Rice Flour Face Mask

Rice flour has been used by women around the globe for thousands of years to enhance their beauty and the clarity of their skin. In Feudal Japan, it was often used by the Geisha to maintain a soft porcelain hue and for warding off hyper-pigmentation, UV exposure, and aging while looking delicate, feminine, and refined.

Today, you can still reap the many benefits of rice flour in your beauty routine. There are so many ways that you can use it, and it is so simple to make at home with the white rice you have on hand.

Some examples of rice flour’s benefits include:

• It’s great as a cosmetic primer (just brush it on in a thin layer, then apply your make-up)
• As a setting powder for make-up
• Reduces shine
• Soaks up excess oil
• Heals acne
• Can be used as a facial scrub
• Can be used as a facial mask (works well mixed in facial clay)
• It reduces inflammation
• Lightens the skin with consistent use (this includes stubborn hyperpigmentation and other dark spots)

Rice flour can be found at any Indian or Asian food markets, but I chose to make it myself at home to see how it went, and I’d say it came out just as expected!

Check out the video at the bottom of the post to see how I did it.

How to Make a Rice Flour Face Mask for Beautifully Clear Skin

Rice flour can be used in a number of different skincare recipes, but my favorite one at the moment is mixing it with manuka honey and a drop of my favorite essential oil, tea tree.

Rice Flour Mask with Manuka Honey

This mask is fantastic if you have acne, redness, and inflammation in the skin. The manuka honey is highly anti-bacterial and very soothing to inflamed angry skin, just make sure to get manuka honey with a bioactivity of 16+ or higher.

You can learn more about the amazing benefits of manuka honey here – it’s definitely one of my must have clear skin remedies!

The rice flour will brighten hyperpigmentation, reduce redness, and smooth the skin while the medicinal honey kills acne-causing bacteria and restores moisture.

Loving Preparation – Rice Flour Face Mask Recipe

To begin, slowly stir a small amount of manuka honey into about one tablespoon of homemade rice flour until you reach the desired consistency. I used about equal parts of each and then added a drop of lavender essential oil for relaxation and for its skin calming properties.

If the mask is too runny, simply add more rice flour to thicken it. If it’s too thick, add a little more honey and so on until you reach the desired consistency.

Rice Flour Mask with Rose

Another favorite mask is rice flour and rose water. This mask smells sooo good! The rose fragrance is perfect for calming the nerves during stressful events and uplifts the spirits after a long day.

Rose water is known to be astringent, cooling, anti-bacterial, and calming for the skin which is why it is used for a variety of skin ailments like sunburn, redness, acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Learn how to make your own rosewater here.

Preparation

All you have to do is slowly pour the rose water into 1 TB of rice flour. It should reach the consistency of a thick lotion. If it gets too thin and runny, add more rice flour to thicken the mask. Mixing in a bit of kaolin clay adds a nice purifying touch to this mask recipe.

Apply to the face evenly and leave on for 15-20 minutes, or until dry.

As you rinse, use the rice flour to gently exfoliate your skin. Use this mask 2-3 times a week.
