This time of year is the perfect opportunity to infuse everything in your life with the scent of cinnamon, clove, peppermint, citrus, and garden herbs and nothing personifies those aromas better than four thieves essential oil.
What better way to fill your home with holiday-inspired scents than with a homemade four thieves candle? Dotting a few on your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner table adds the perfect ambiance to every holiday occasion.
Not only that, the essential oils within the candles will help stave off a few germs as they burn merrily in your home, though I still prefer using a diffuser for some serious anti-germ protection.
Whatever your reasons, these four thieves candles will be the perfect addition to your living space this holiday season.
Homemade Festive Four Thieves Candle Recipe
Making your own candles may seem a bit daunting, but it’s actually pretty simple! All you need to do is melt your ingredients, add in the essential oils, then pour the final mixture into your candle tin of choice.
In order to make a good homemade candle safely, use the following recommendations:
- Line your workspace to make clean-up easy.
- Use a double boiler to melt your wax. Wax can catch on fire over direct heat!
- Refrain from using a microwave to melt wax – it can catch on fire!
- Make sure you use candle-safe tins/containers – some materials can melt or crack which is a fire hazard.
- Do not use water to put out a wax-fire – douse it in baking soda instead to put out the flames.
- Test your candles before giving them away as gifts to make sure they are safe.
Aside from these safety tips, it’s time to make some four thieves candles!
I like to make 4 oz sized candles, but you can make any size you like – even tea lights if you so desired.
Here’s what you’re going to need to make one 4 oz candle:
- An accurate kitchen scale
- A Pyrex measuring cup
- A saucepan
- A flexible spatula
- Some skewers for holding the wick in place while pouring
- One 4 oz candle tin like this (or two 2 oz jars or eight tealight tins)
- Candle wicks with wick holders (use these ones for tealights)
- 75g of soy wax flakes
- 270 drops of thieves essential oil (this will make a 6% dilution which is the minimum for a well-scented candle but you may be able to use less - feel free to experiment)
Alternatively, you can make your own four thieves essential oil (which you can learn how to do here) or use ready-made thieves blends.
Some of my favorites include:
You can also scent your candle differently by using essential oil blends like:
Once you have all of your ingredients together, you can begin to assemble your candles.
How to Make Four Thieves Candles
- Begin by measuring out your soy wax in the Pyrex measuring cup using the kitchen scale.
- Next, count out all your essential oil drops into a small glass dish so that they are easy to add to the wax.
- Bring 1 inch of water to a simmer in the saucepan and place the Pyrex with the wax in the center.
- Allow the wax to melt completely, stirring on occasion as needed with the spatula.
- While the wax is melting, get your candle tins ready by placing the wicks in the tins and using a skewer to keep it straight. You can use a piece of soy wax to adhere the wick holder to the bottom of the tin if needed.
- Once the soy wax has melted through, remove it from the heat.
- Allow the wax to cool slightly but not solidify.
- Add your essential oil and stir to mix.
- Pour the final mixture into your readied tins of choice and allow the candles to cool completely. Do not put them in the fridge to cool faster because this will cause cracking.
- Once cooled, trim the wicks to about ½ an inch in length.
And voila! You’ve got yourself the perfect homemade four thieves candle!
Wrap them in ribbon and twine or festive washi tape and bag them in pretty cellophane to give away as gifts. Or, just place them around the house and enjoy the warming and spicy scent of four thieves for yourself!

Hello I was wondering if you can make candles using thieves oil . I know that this oil is used for antibacterial properties, but does it still and the same properties if it is used in candle?
