Is Hemp Seed Oil The New Holy Grail? An Oil Re-evaluation.
For the past few years, jojoba oil has been my “Holy Grail” acne treatment, especially for stubborn blackheads and whiteheads. While it does dissolve these icky little plugs, jojoba oil can cause some people’s skin to “purge” toxins when they begin using it, making acne worse before it gets better. For a lot of people, this is pretty scary! No one wants their skin to get worse, but unfortunately, that’s just how jojoba oil seems to work.
I still love jojoba oil though, and it is definitely in my top 5 oils to use for healthy clear skin. But is there a better alternative?
You bet!
Hemp Seed Oil - Your Skin's New Best Friend
Hemp oil, as you may know, comes from the Cannabis plant as is known to be one of the most nutritious oils for the skin.
Hemp oil contains Vitamins D and E and has the ability to reduce inflammation, blotchiness, dryness, and uneven texture without clogging the pores.
It also has a balanced ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids (3:1) which helps reduce the symptoms of acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema.
Hemp seed oil has a comedogenic rating of zero, meaning that it has zero chance of breaking you out or clogging your pores. It’s totally A-Okay to use on acne prone skin and will actually help your skin balance its sebum (oil) production.
Its thinner consistency makes it great for all skin types, especially those who have oilier skin and sinks in soon after application. It feels light yet moisturizing and goes well under makeup.
Internal Use of Hemp Seed Oil for Acne
Another cool thing about hemp seed oil is that it contains about 60% linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that helps regulate sebum production. Sebum is produced to help lubricate the skin without clogging pores, but when our diets lack enough linoleic acid it can become sticky and easily hardens in the pores. This hardened sebum then becomes a blackhead, whitehead, or acne lesion.
Consuming a high-quality hemp seed oil will help increase your levels of linoleic acid which will improve the quality and amount of oil your skin produces. Pretty soon, you’ll have oil that will be less likely to clog your pores! I like to take about 1-2 TB a day; more than enough to meet your daily value for essential fatty acids. Taking it every day is safe and beneficial for healthy skin.
Which Hemp Oil is Best?
• High quality, unrefined, cold-pressed hemp oil will be a gorgeous green color with a pleasantly nutty flavor. It is easy to substitute it in salad dressing recipes. I even like adding it to smoothies.
• Refined hemp seed oil will be clear and devoid of nutrients so be sure to check the label.
External Use of Hemp Seed Oil for Acne
As an added benefit, hemp seed oil also happens to be one of the best moisturizers out there because it is able to penetrate skin cells and lubricate them. Since it doesn’t clog your pores, it is safe to use daily and will keep your skin radiant and silky smooth.
Hemp Seed Oil will also Relieve/Improve
• Redness
• Itchiness
• Dry patches
• Blotchy skin
• Skin tone
• Inflammation
To Use
Simply wet your face with warm water and apply a small amount on your skin. I like to massage it in before gently towel drying it off. Use at least once a day.
As far as the OCM, I would recommend trying it out. I don’t currently use it as a cleanser only because it is a bit pricey so I save it for moisturizing.
Which Hemp Seed Oil Should I Buy?
There are many fantastic companies out there that make high-quality hemp seed oil. The main thing to look for is cold pressed, organic, unrefined hemp oil if you can find it.
The absolute BEST hemp oil I’ve come across is this one. Which does not have to be refrigerated because it is packaged in Miron glass, a type of glass that is highly vibrational and is known to preserve and protect substances contained within it for long periods of time.
Having said that, I have found a new hemp seed oil that really does put all the rest to shame, and that's because it's ozonated.
Hemp seed oil that is infused with ozone (activated oxygen) is highly anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and is incredibly healing.
This makes ozonated hemp seed oil the strongest and most effective oil you can use for treating acne.
You can find ozonated hemp seed oil here. Be aware that the smell of ozone is pretty dang strong and can be off-putting at first. However, the difference this oil has made to my skin is worth it.
I also really like this Organic Hemp Oil for both internal and external use, and this Pure Hemp Seed Body Oil for external use. Both of these oils must be refrigerated to keep them fresh.
I just know you'll be amazed by the results you're going to see using hemp seed oil. Your blemishes will begin to diminish and your skin will be baby soft. I really hope you give it a go =)

Hi! I’ve been using the Nature’s Brand hemp seed oil you recommended. Loving so far! I also like that the bottle doesn’t have to be refrigerated. However, the cap can be a little greasy and hard to travel with. Have you come across any with a pump or eye dropper that’s easier to handle? Any tips for traveling with oils? TIA!
Tash says
I find that dropper bottle work really well for travel! You can even get tiny 1/2 oz sizes 🙂

Hope I'm not too late catching you here Tash! My main focus is using hemp seed oil to moisturize my skin and help get rid of my acne. Meaning the ozonated one is recommended by you. Sadly I don't think I'm able to get this in germany in a timely manner, speaking 4-5 weeks delivery time. "Normal" organic cold pressed hemp seed oil should work too, right?
Pretty sure I can get some in germany. I know this is over the top asking you this but right now I'm using epiduo (the 0,3% one) to somehow help get rid of my acne and a pretty basic moisturizer which can't "counter" epiduo, speaking dryness, reduced wound-healing, scarring etc. From using those chemicals my skin is very likely also dehydrated... which is why I'd also like ask you, if you could recommend any moisturizer I should watch out for.
I guess I've rambled on enough, to cut it short:
Me:
oily / dehydrated, acne-prone (active acne), acne scarring, discoloration (PIH), uneven skin (+ uneven skin tone), wounds
Looking for:
help (lol), moisturizer that will mainly not break me out and provide stable moisture, hemp seed oil
current "routine" 🙁
wash face with water using my hands, apply epiduo, apply moisturizer
in the morning i just skip epiduo
Rosehip most likely broke me out, which is why I'm looking into hemp seed oil.
I know this is long and I don't expect you to magically find the solution to all of my problems. If you have ANY hints or directions I could explore and read up on, I'd love you to the moon.
Many many thanks and a most blessed day to you!
Tash says
Hi Pieps!
No worries at all! 🙂
You can definitely use regular hemp seed oil! I actually had to stop using the ozonated version because, for some reason, the smell of it would trigger my asthma after a while :/ I'm very sensitive to "vapor-like smells" in the air so that was a bummer!
Do you think you are allergic to roses? I only ask because I think if you used rose water (or a different floral water/hydrosol) on the skin before applying the hemp oil that it would help with the dehydration.
Pieps says
Hi Tash,
Thanks for answering! 🙂
I actually haven't tried rose water yet, I'll give it a shot. Thanks a ton!

This is some good information about hemp oil. I wasn't aware that you can use it internally to get rid of acne. I wonder if it would be smart to make a tea out of a flavored hemp oil.
Holly says
Hi Tash! I have sensitive oily skin. I get some active pimples but mostly blackheads and clogged pores. I’m sure skin is dehydrated as well. A few questions:
1. I’ve been using hempseed oil for about a week, alone or in combo with jojoba/castor oil. It does help breakup blackheads, but I have a tingly, almost cool feeling in my face. I’m not red or irritated, and it isn’t an unpleasant feeling, just different. I didn’t have this with just jojoba/castor oils, so pretty sure it’s the hemp. Am I having a mild reaction to hempseed oil, or is this just what “clean” feels like?
2. The OCM recommends steaming the face with hot/warm water washcloth, but barrier repair for dehydrated skin says use cool/tepid water. What do you recommend if someone needs to do both?
3. I’m doing OCM at night but not sure what to use in the morning. I had an exfoliating face wash but now that seems too harsh. Is clay/honey wash gentle enough for everyday morning cleansing?
Thanks for all your help!
Tash says
Hi Holly!
That's really interesting about the hemp seed oil! I tried to see if I could find any info on this and couldn't find a thing 🙁 I would just keep a close eye on your skin and how it reacts to see if it's just a sensation thing and not an allergy thing. Normally allergies will manifest in some form of rash, redness, or irritation but since you are experiencing none of those I wonder if it's something else.
For dehydrated skin, using cooler water for cleansing is a definite must! In fact, if you are able to avoid using water that would be even better. I often don't use water unless I'm using pore strips which need an oil-free surface to stick to. In your case, I would use tepid water and see how that feels 🙂 Dehydrated skin is really tricky to deal with since you need to stay hydrated by drinking enough water daily while also keeping your skin hydrated. I do this by oil cleansing first, then spritzing my face with rose water, then applying a bit of hyaluronic acid, and then applying a drop or two of facial oil like rosehip or hemp seed oil to seal in moisture. If your skin is still feeling dehydrated, you may need to get a moisturizer that has cholesterol in it. The one called Skin Food by Weleda is a good one, but keep in mind that a tiny bit goes a loooong way otherwise it is far too greasy feeling on the skin. I have used it with great results though, so it may be worth looking into 🙂 I just apply it after the rose water.
In the morning, I will usually just spritz my face with more rose water, apply a drop or two of hemp seed oil or rosehip oil to a cotton pad, and use that to cleanse my skin in a no-fuss manner. It's quick and easy! I will then just spray on a bit more rose water and either moisturize with another drop of oil or apply the tiniest amount of Skin Food for moisture.
The honey and clay cleanser is great to use both morning and night! I really enjoy using it when I feel like switching it up and it never feels like it's stripping my skin since the honey is a humectant.
I hope this is helpful 🙂 Please let me know how things go and if you have more questions!

hello tash, I really enjoy reading your articles on skin care as they are very well researched and written. I have a damaged skin barrier due to over exfoliation, and have since stopped using any sort of chemicals on my skin. I recently started using hemp seed oil as a moisturizer to calm the itchiness and redness, it has so far worked quite well, however I have one question, what is the best time to use the hemp seed oil to maximize its efficiency? in the morning after a shower or at night before going to bed? I'm trying as much as possible to limit the amount of water I put on my skin, so I currently only wet my face with a damp cloth after a shower and then apply the oil.
Tash says
Hi Hannan!
I actually like to spritz my face with rose water before applying oils. it works really well and the rose water will not dry out your skin, in fact, it will help balance PH levels, reduce redness, and help the skin soak up more moisture. i will do this both morning and night, but you can do what feel best for your skin 🙂

Samantha says
Does the hemp seed oil removes blackheads? Like jojoba oil?
Tash says
Hi Samantha!
It won't work AS well because jojoba oil is actually a wax just like our natural sebum. However, if you're really having trouble with black heads, I have used the biore pore strips just to help get the really troublesome ones out. You can even cut them up to fit over specific areas if needed. I don't usually like using pore strips, but sometime black heads will not dissolve for many many months even when using jojoba oil. You will also want to figure out why you're getting black heads so that you can treat the root cause. Mine is an over production of oil, so I have been working on naturally balancing out those levels.
Jennifer says
Hi Tash!
First of all; love your work! In just a few days you've taught me so much about my skin and oils. I've been into oils a while now, but only recently have real concerns about my skin. I always had some pimples, white and black heads on my t-zone but nothing i couldn't handle. Since 2,5 years ago i moved to Hong Kong, a great city but so terrible for the skin! It's mostly very hot and humid and the air is very polluted. I soon got 1 and then 2 deep white heads on my cheeks that just wouldn't come out for weeks or maybe even months. Not very visible or anything so i didn't do anything about it. Later i learned about removing my make-up with an oil balm from Banila. Few months further; One time i got in front of the tv and massaged my skin with the balm so long that i felt grain like things, and i realized they're black heads. It's essentially doing what OCM does! (don't know why i was so surprised about it since they're both oils) So i thought yes! I can massage those pesky white heads out! After a while one did came out as a pimple but soon somewhere else another white head appeared and another. I thought my skin might be purging (didn't fully understand how that worked) Then I purchased a Foreo and thought I'd sort of cleanse and vibrate that white head out of here, but that didn't happen. To make a long story short (it's already quite long haha, sorry) my cheeks are full with white heads now and it's freaking me out!
So after reading your (and some other) blogs about natural skincare i determined that I'm probably over-washing my face. I'm already trying to drink more water since I initially thought/think my skin is dehydrated. I stopped oil cleansing whenever I don't wear make-up, and when I am wearing make-up I try to rub my cheeks just a few seconds so that I don't strip away my skin oils. I'm using sheet masks and put honey on my face almost daily. And then also put on hydrating essence, cream, acne cream (sulfur, sometimes benzyl peroxide but just twice a week or so cause it dries my skin so much) and oil (rosehip, also considering hemp seed oil now that i've read this post). Not always all at once though.
Then yesterday when i extracted a few that had finally become black heads I noticed the sebum is still very dry. I just don't understand and start feeling desperate! Do you think I should just have more patience or am i doing something wrong?
Tash says
Hi Jennifer!
It sounds like your outer most barrier is damaged. This is what causes your skin to not just be a bit dry, but feel dehydrated! That's why your sebum is dry and you are getting a lot of white heads and black heads. This is definitely caused by over-washing the skin. The best thing to do right now is to limit how often you wash your face (once a day would be best if you can manage it) and use only tepic water to rinse since warm or hot water can further strip your skin.
The next thing you will want to do is use something called hyaluronic acid. This will attract moisture into your skin. So what I do is cleanse my skin, blot it dry, spray on a bunch of rose water, and then mix a drop or two of hyaluronic acid with a pure face oil. I will then massage it into my damp skin. This has really helped with a damaged outer most barrier and is a very gentle approach. keep in mind that repairing the barrier can take time. You will need to make sure you stay hydrated and take some good omega 3s (I like the Nordic Naturals brand) daily. The key is to restore your skin's ability to hold onto water. You can read more on barrier repair HERE 🙂

I use a bit more products than you mentioned since I feel it's still tight after I wake up. I think it's because I'm constantly in a room with airco. My skin looks better than the last time I sent you a message, but after a while it seems it kinda stays the same? Like, not improving even more

Hey Tash, I been looking for an oil to use at night, and I would like to try hemp oil. When I wake up in the morning my face is so oily, so I'm sure the oil is because I'm using the wrong oils. I have clog pores on my nose very bad, just a little on my chin. The rest if my face is normal, but my forehead can get dry if I use the wrong products. I also have uneven skin tone, but sensitive. I have read some reviews on hemp oil being somewhat watery, and does not soak in to skin, needs to be rubbed into damp skin. I oil cleans, then tone with rose water, how can I apply hemp oil to my skin after toning, and what can I add to the hemp oil, so I'm not just using it alone, to help out with my skin?
Tash says
Hi Stephanie!
What you can do is apply the hemp oil while your skin is wet with rose water. This will allow it to soak in 🙂 Also, has your skin always been oily? I have naturally oily skin and always wake up with a sheen of oil in the morning.
Kirsten says
Should the hemp seed oil only be refrigerated after opening, or already before that?
Tash says
Hi Kirsten!
It depends on the brand. When I worked at WFM, our hemp seed oil was always refrigerated. However, the hemp seed oil in the grocery department was not. No matter which brand you go with, I recommend refrigerating it afterward 🙂
Nko says
I recently used Nutiva Hemp seed oil on my face and I broke out in white heads and some red spots on my forehead the next day... Does your skin usually go through a purging state in the beginning?
Tash says
Hi Nko!
Your skin can defintely go through a purge once you start using hemp or jojoba seed oil. This is because your skin is finally able to release built up sebum and other toxins from the skin. I recommend gently exfoliating 1-2 times a week to help unclog the pores during this transition. if after several weeks your skin does not begin to clear, it's possible that hemp seed oil isn;t right for your skin type. Hope this helps!

Hi. I use a medication for rosacea. I see hemp oil is water soluble. Would it wash off your face with a micellar water?? I would need it completely washed off for my rosacea gel to penetrate my skin.

Hi Linda!
I'm not super familiar with mycellar water so I can't say for sure if it will remove the hemp seed oil completely. If you try it out though, please let us know how it goes! 🙂

I like to use hemp seed oil on my face mixed with a few drops of pure oregano oil. This has been amazing at clearing my acne. I have oily acne prone skin that can also be dry at times in the winter. I suspect that my breakouts are from acne-causing bacteria, an overgrowth of yeast, and sebum clogging my pores. Oregano oil is good for killing yeast and bacteria, so it is amazing against acne. My acne hasn't totally cleared yet, but it's been about 5 days and I do notice a big difference. I am also going to try taking oregano oil capsules, probiotics, fish oil, evening primrose oil, and flax seed oil to help balance my skin from the inside. I could likely replace one of the supplements with hemp seed oil capsules though!
Tash says
Hi Jen!
This is great! Oregano oil really is amazing for killing bacteria and the supplements you're taking are great for clear skin as well! Good luck on your journey and keep us posted on your results 🙂
Kayleen Negron says
I couldn't find the area to ask a comment. I'm been using hemp seed oil, and occasionally lavender and tea tree oils on break outs. It has only been a week, I have also been using some vitamins like zinc, a probiotic, and have been looking at borage oil (i am currently on spirotolactone). My acne might be hormonal, in addition to other causes -, and gets hard and red and inflammatory with white heads on the chin,
My question is how long should I give this new regimen? I don't want to quit prematurely., but my acne is really affecting my self esteem. How long should I want to see results?
Tash says
Hi Kayleen!
The cycle of acne can range from 6 weeks to three months so I always say give a regimen at least 3 months to really see its results. 🙂
Michele says
Hi Tash,
I agree that hemp seed oil is brilliant as a cleanser and moisturiser, and in fact it's the only thing that my combination/ hormonal acne/ sensitive skin doesn't react to! I cannot use conventional cleansers and moisturisers, especially around the eye area, and finding out about hemp seed oil has been a God-send! I've been using the 100% organic pressed variety found in the food aisle for almost a year now. I did try a cosmetic grade body hemp oil on my face, but didn't find it as nourishing; it was very thin in consistency and also didn't remove makeup as well. I recommend this oil to anyone who will listen... although I still find people who think its odd to put oil on your face. In terms of drying the skin out slightly as some have commented, I only find this happens when you rinse the oil with water by splashing a lot of water on your face; I tend to use damp cotton pads to remove it. Saying that doing OCM does help during periods of breakouts, and if a slight dryness occurs moisturising with the oil after quickly sorts this out.
Thanks for a great post!
Tash says
Thank you for your insight Michele! I'll have to recommend using a damp towel for oil removal to others. Sound much less drying than water alone 🙂

I have 3 different oils, I read very good reviews on all of them. They are Grapeseed, Olive oil and hemp seed oil. I also have Castor oil that I would mix with the Grapeseed. I'm in my 50's and still struggle with breakouts. My face shows past acne damage such as scarring and discoloration. I'm confused not to mention frustrated!! And at my age, wrinkles are starting to creep up. Any suggestions??? Thank you
Tash says
Hi Cindy!
How is the hydration level of your skin? I'm wondering if your outer skin barrier may be damaged which is why you may be experiencing these breakouts.

Hi Tash
Can I use a combination of jojoba oil and hemp seed oil together as part of the purging process of blackheads, whiteheads and acne?
When my skin has been purged, can I add Rosehip Oil and Lavender essential oil in the blend.
I hope to hear from you shortly.
Regards
Sharon
Tash says
Hi Sharon!
You can definitely use those combinations. The key is to find what works best for your skin type, so it may take a few experiments to see what works! If you find that you are still getting blackheads, try the hemp seed oil alone and make sure you are getting enough electrolytes to keep your skin hydrated.
Best of luck!

Hi there!
You could use a homeopathic cream that contains ingredients for itching. Calendula cream is really nice and can be found in most natural health food stores 🙂 Try to cut out the gluten if you can!

Hi John!
I'm not a doctor, so I'm not sure if hemp seed oil will help with what you have. However, you can certainly apply the hemp seed oil topically and add it to your diet. It is a very healthy oil to consume and use for skin care so it certainly wouldn't hurt to give it a try. Have you seen a doctor who could explain what those red brown spots could be?

If I mix these oils together can I leave it on overnight? Or is it OK to mix them at all?
Tash says
Hi Zoltan!
You can definitely mix hemp seed and castor oil together and you can leave them on overnight 🙂

Okie, So do u use a cleanser prior using the hemp oil?
U said wash the face with warm water, meaning dripping wet or dampen it?Im asking because oil doesnt mix with water,in case if we were to use the oil on dripping wet face and massage?
Im a little confused here
Tash says
Hi Faryanna!
I use warm water to help open my pores before cleansing with the hemp seed oil. The water also helps the oil spread over the skin making it either to apply when cleansing or when using hemp seed oil as a moisturizer. Hope this helps!
faryanna says
Hi Tash
ok for 3 nights Ive been using hemp seed oil on my damp skin after my regular cleanser.I added few drops of water to help to spread the oil(I use 3 drops of oil). It's sinks well, but I notice the next morning my face is kinda dry.( Note: my face is dehydrated and drier side with occasional random breakouts.)
I have also Jojoba oil ( scared to use due to purging effect)and pumpkin seed oil in hand.I've started with hemp as it's rated 0 in pore clogging.
Am I doing it right or the hemp sont for my skin? How many times should I exfoliate in case building ups of dead skin?I read ppl with ocm every night will exfoliate the next morning.
Tash says
Hello again!
If your skin is dry you can try using a few more drops of hemp oil. Also consider upping your hydration as well. As far as exfoliation goes, I would do it as often as is comfortable but no more than once per day. You want to be gentle while exfoliating too so that you don't aggravate your skin. You may also want to try using a papaya enzyme mask (mash up fresh papaya and apply it to the skin every 3 days) to help remove clogged dry skin. If your face is still too dry you may need to use more moisture that your skin agrees with.
faryanna says
I will try the enzyme mask thank you.But wouldn't my skin be even more drier if I add more drops of hemp seed?Hydration do u mean after I apply the oil?any suggestion?
Tash says
The hemp seed oil itself will not dry out your skin. The reason is because hemp seed oil is very light compared to oils like coconut oil. If you need more moisture you can use a high quality lotion that does not break you out on top of the oil if needed. 🙂

Tash,
Love your articles and just had a quick question. Through out the article, you use "hemp seed oil" and "hemp oil" interchangeably. For example when you listed which brand you personally prefer you linked a hemp oil product for internal/external use and then a hemp seed oil for external use. Just doing a brief search, there seems to be a difference between "hemp oil" and "hemp seed oil". The former being also known as cannabis oil, and the latter being the super food. Are you short handing "hemp seed oil" to "hemp oil" or do you actually mean hemp oil when saying "hemp oil". Thanks in advance for the clarification.
Tash says
Hi Jonny!
Sorry for the confusion! I am referring to the "hemp seed oil" superfood version only in the article 🙂

Shannon says
My daughter is 11 going on 12 has oil skin braking out in t zone she is so embrassed what do you suggest every saying hormones well not everyone has acne but she does and want to clear it up ASAP lol
Tash says
Hi Shannon!
I would definitely look into hemp seed oil as a moisturizer at the very least. Also make sure she isn't eating/drinking junk. At this time in her life a lot of hormones are trying to figure themselves out so it's important to allow her liver to keep things straight. Junk food overburdens the liver and that's when excess hormones tend to recirculate into the bloodstream and attribute to acne. One good thing to try topically is adding 1 drop of tea tree essential oil to her moisturizer at night (this can be the hemp seed oil) before bed. It will kill the acne causing bacteria and help clear up what she has. Keep in mind that this won't keep further breakouts from happening, in order to do that you need some healthy lifestyle changes 🙂 Hope this helps! Also tell her NOT to pick!

I am new to OCM and have so many questions! I just started using Hemp oil and so far, for the most part, I love it!! I feel like I may be applying it wrong though, causing it to feel like it's sitting on top of my skin and making it looking shiny/oily. I am currently using Castor oil and Jojoba. I think I used way too much CO with my original mix which caused a lot of drying. I'm now mixing each time I washed to mess with different amounts to see what works. Originally, I was just cleansing with my oil mix and would apply jojoba after since my skin was so dry. My skin has been breaking out but I feel it's due to a combo of my skin being too dry and the effects of just starting OCM. My newest method as of 3 cleanings ago, is to clean with CO and jojoba, tone with Thyer's witch hazel, and then moisturize with hemp oil. Here are my questions (and I apologize so many)....
- For how long should I be rubbing the oil mixture into my skin for cleansing? I currently do about 2-3 minutes but when I use the toner there is makeup on the cotton ball, even when I use the toner again in the morning.
- My skin is very hydrated when I use hemp oil but it's also seems like it's staying on top of my skin and not absorbing. Even when I rub and rub and rub trying to get it to absorb into my skin. Should I applying it when my skin is damp? I've tried this and it just seems to move around my skin, not absorbing. Maybe it is and after I've rubbed it in for a few minutes I wipe off the excess?
- How much hemp oil do you apply for moisturizing? Maybe I am applying too much...
- I still have breakouts but I'm sticking with it assuming my skin is just getting used to OCM. However, if it continues should I switch to grapeseed oil and is it as cleansing as CO?
- At this point, I feel like I have to do something to my face in the morning still. I know a lot of people don't. I am rinsing with warm water, toning, and moisturizing with hemp oil. Any other suggestions?
- Not being used to refrigerating skincare products, I left my help oil out all night. Should I buy new hemp oil?
THANKS!!!!

I eat clean, no processed foods, no gluten and no dairy. I also juice every day and eat a ton of fermented foods. I'm working with my naturopath who has me on some homeopathics to balance out my body. It's just so frustrating when you do everything "right" and nothing helps!

Help! I've steuggled with bad acne since age 11. I went cold turkey on my chemical cleansing routine and I've been using the OCM for 2 weeks using a blend of about 1/2&1/2 caster oil to jojoba. The first week was great. Now, my skin looks AWFUL. I'm talking cystic acne, white heads, EVERYWHERE! My skin hasn't been this bad since I was a teenager. After reading your post today I got some hemp seed oil as well as almond oil. Because I wear so much makeup to cover this unsightly face of mine, tonight I did a "pre-wash" using almond oil to get the makeup off. Then I did the OCM using a mix of 2/3 hemp seed oil and 1/3 tea tree. I then used a toner of ACV, water, and a few different EOs. Finally I moisturized with hemp seed oil. And advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Chesla!
It sounds like the castor oil is the culprit. Some people's skin just don't agree with it. Also, the OCM can cause a purge because your skin is getting rid of all the toxins. How has the hemp seed oil mixture been working out for you?
Chesla Thompson says
For a while it was getting better. Currently it's definitely better than it was but I'm still breaking out quite a bit. Any suggestions for other oils I could try incorporating with the hemp?

How about lifestyle and diet?

Hi Chesla!
I too tried the oil cleansing method last year using the same ingredients you did and my skin broke out like crazy, awful cysts and whiteheads. I haven't dared trying it since and probably won't. If you're acne prone both jojoba and castor oil could break you out, (they're both like 2 on the comedogenic scale I think). Sunflower oil is along with hemp seed oil a 0 on the scale, but I haven't tried it with the OCM. I've only used it as a mosturizer. Here's a good article on the linoleic acid in oils http://www.minimalistbeauty.com/oils-specifically-for-acne-prone-skin/

Hi I have been blending my own face and body oil for a while now. Some oils will leave an oily feel on skin, if used on their own, so best try blending it with another oil, such as grapeseed oil or refined rosehip. I say refined rosehip, as none refined is recommended to only use 10% of total size making, which would be no good for thinning out the hempseed oil. They're is still plenty of beneficial nutrients left in refined rosehip, depending on supplier, well this is what I have found, as still reduces redness in the potions I have made.

Ps when I say redness, I am referring to rosacea/redness of white skin, but also find it reduces scaring on black skins, which is more prone to marks.
Ps
This is a great blog page, as can save people loaaaads a money on high street face oils.

Hi. I really like your website and I found a ton of useful information on how to cleanse my face with hemp seed oil. Thanks a lot. But my question is, what products should I use as a toner? I tried rose water with the mother apple cider vinegar but I feel is a bit drying for my normal combination skin prone to blemish. Thank you so much!!!
Tash says
Hi Irenes!
I'm really happy that you love my site! Thank you! 🙂
You may want to just try rose water by itself. Even with oily skin, I still find that I need to use a few drops of hemp oil as a moisturizer after using any type of toner.

Hemp oil can clog pores. Because it's non-comedogenic, it means it's very unlikely to clog you; however still possible. Each person's skin is different so patch test before putting it all over your face/body. There have been adverse reactions to hemp oil. Also @gina, be careful of steaming because it risks broken capillaries.
Meg says
I thought an oil with a 0 rating (such as hemp oil) on the comedogenic scale meant something will definitely not clog your pores.
Kae says
No, it just means it's very unlikely

Hi Tash,
I've been cleansing my face with this hemp oil to clear out my clogged pores... I've been steaming as well so that my pores open up to make it easier to unclog the pores with the oil. I've heard wonders with this oil and so I've been using it for the past week. The last few days Ive been breaking out all over the areas where my clogged pores are at. My question to you is is this a purging period?
Tash says
Hi Gina!
When I used hemp oil my skin went through a detox period that lasted for several weeks before it got clearer. For a lot of people this is a really common, so just make sure you're using clean hands when using the oil.
gina says
Thank you much for responding.. I really appreciate the time you take to do this. Now that I've got these breakouts how do you think I should treat them? I dont want to pop any one of them as I'm scared to damage my skin permanently with those "ice pick" marks.
Tash says
Hello again!
Yeah, I would definitely try to avoid popping any of them if you can. I find that using essential oils like tea tree can really help speed up the healing of pesky breakouts. Simply add 1 drop to the hemp oil you will use for washing/moisturizing in your hand and apply to trouble areas evenly twice a day.
There may not be a lot you can do topically since this is likely a detox. My best advice is to eat clean, stay hydrated, get sunshine, exercise regularly, and sleep well! I have found that by doing these things consistently, many have found their way to clear skin =) If things don't clear up after at least 6 weeks, then that would mean hemp oil is not right for your skin type. Another reason could be a more internal issue like digestive health, hormones, etc.
vicky says
Try blending tea tree oil in with the hempseed oil. when using essential oil be careful, as can irritate sensitive skins the rule of thumb is 1 drop essential oil, to every mil of carrier. so if making 50ml you can use, up to 50 drops of any essential oil, or 30 drops of one essential oil, and 20 of another.

Hello,
I've just started using this; I like the way it hydrates.. my main problem is that ive got a ton of blackeads. Will this take them away just by putting this oil on?
Tash says
Hemp seed oil is really good for dissolving blackheads over a few weeks of consistent application. Another great oil for blackheads is jojoba oil =)

Awesome! I have hemp seed oil that I add to my salad dressings. I'll have to switch to using it on my skin! I have hormonal acne and nothing has really helped the breakouts go away completely. I do oil cleansing and homemade clay masks, charcoal masks and oil (charcoal mixed with coconut oil and baking soda). I even make my own complex toner with rose hydrosol, an herbal skin tincture, and essential oils. I'll add hemp seed oil to my routine!
Tash says
Hi Rachel!
It's awesome stuff! Won't clog your pores at all =)
