If there’s one thing worse than blemishes, it’s the hyperpigmentation that ensues soon after. I don’t know about you, but when I get acne breakouts, even if I don’t touch them hardly at all, they leave dark red spots behind that can last months at a time, sometimes even longer.
Now, I’ve spoken about ways to treat and prevent these red marks before, but sometimes you want something you can make once that’s effective and will last a few weeks. That’s where this nifty, handy dandy little serum comes in. Not only does it support and nourish your skin, it will also fade those pesky marks AND help prevent scarring.
What also cool is this serum will even PREVENT acne, so what’s not to love?
So here we go…
Homemade Serum for Acne Prone Skin
Ingredients You Will Need:
• 1 TB rosehip oil
• 4 drops lavender essential oil or copaiba essential oil
• 4 drops frankincense essential oil
Loving Preparation - Serum for Acne Prone Skin
1. Pour the rosehip oil through a small metal funnel into a glass dropper bottle.
2. Remove the funnel and add the essential oils one by one very carefully.
3. Once added, cap the dropper bottle tightly and then ROLL the bottle between your palms for a few seconds. NEVER shake the bottle or you will subject your serum to oxidation which will make your serum go rancid much faster.
4. Before each use, gently roll the bottle between your palms then apply 2-3 drops of serum to your face and neck. (This works best if your skin is still damp so I love spritzing my face with rose water before applying.)
5. Use day and night on clean skin.

Why These Ingredients Work
Rosehip Oil
An incredibly balancing and healing oil; rosehip oil also provides the skin a very absorbable form of vitamin C as well as several antioxidants and anti-aging properties. It deeply moisturizes the skin without feeling heavy or greasy and does not leave a sheen on the skin when used with a hydrosol like rose water.
Rosehip oil is also well tolerated by those with acne prone and sensitive skin types.
Lavender Essential Oil
Not only is lavender essential oil calming, it is also very soothing for skin types that are easily irritated or tend to be inflamed. It is known to fight redness and reduces the appearance and formation of scars.
Frankincense Essential Oil
One of the most restorative oils; frankincense has the ability to prevent and heal blemishes, scars, and hyperpigmentation caused by acne. You can read more about how to get rid of hyperpigmentation here.
Copaiba Essential Oil
This essential oil is known to amplify any essential oil you pair it with so I love to add it to skincare recipes.

I wach my face now with clay and honey....
Also if you have a face sunscreen non comedogenic to recommend that will be great...Recently I bought Badger the Damascus Rose but I’m afraid to use it because of the Cetearyl alcool...
Can you help me please
I am so deseperate...
Thank you
Tash says
Hi, Marie!
Sunscreen is a really tough one. I still can't use it without making sure to wash it off very well after. I currently use the sunscreen by Beauty Counter and it works well for me. But everyone is different and sunscreen is just one of those things that is extremely unique for every person. I wish I could be more helpful but what I do know id Badger is one of the cleanest brands you can buy. To remove every trace of sunscreen, I use a microfiber cloth to pull everything out of my pores.

Can I replace rosehip oil with hemp seed oil?
Tash says
Yes! 🙂
Arianne says
Hi!am just starting out using essential oils.i have Roman chamomile, lavander, myrrh, frankincense, helichrysum and hemp seeds oil
What recipe/blend can you recommend?I have oily acne prone sensitive skin.thanks!
Tash says
Hi, Arianne!
I would go with:
2 drops frankincense
1 drop each roman chamomile, lavender, myrrh, and helichrysum
Add to 1 oz of hemp seed oil.
Apply 2-3 drops to damp skin (I like to use rose water for this) 1-2 times daily.
You can double the drops above for a 2% dilution, but try the 1% dilution recipe above first since your skin is sensitive to see how your skin likes it.

What is the shelf life for your acne prone skin serum?
Tash says
Hi Carole!
The shelf life is up to one year depending on the carrier oil you choose. Mine is made with jojoba oil and has a shelf life of about 2 years. be sure to store it in a cool dark place. 🙂

Hi Tash, thank you for everything you do! I am wanting to make the acme serum for my son that is in college and suffers from sever acme. Reading the comments I noted the shelf life using jojoba oil but did not see the quantity for storage. Can you please provide or is it better just to use the dropper until it runs out? As a follow up question, if using the serum daily, what is the maximum use of the recipe? Will is last 1 week or 4 weeks? Thank you in advance! JS
Tash says
Jojoba oil has a really long shelf life - well over 6 months if kept in a cool dark place away from heat. The recipe, since it's in a roll-on, has lasted me like 8 months or longer! I just dab it on and that's all I need. If your son uses it on a larger area, it won't last as long. It just depends. I just keep using it until it runs out and make another batch. I always reach for it when a blemish appears!

Thank you!
Tash says
Hi Shirley!
1TB is 0.5 fluid oz or 14.8ml 🙂
Gabriella says
Can I use tea tree oil in this too? If so, how much?
Tash says
Hi Gabriella!
You can definitely use tea tree in this acne serum recipe. I would just add a few drops 🙂

I just started making this, I love young living essential oils and my rosehip oil and i'm glad I found this combination for my face. I get pimples mainly around that time of month and I have a habit of picking so they leave horrible red scratches on my face, they usually take about 3 weeks to clear and then bam it happens again, I have only used this for a few days my skin isn't red and almost everything has healed and I still have 2 weeks until my next break out
Thank you for sharing this serum it is the best
Tash says
Thanks Olivia!
I'm so happy to hear that it's working out for you! =)

I`ve heard its great for reducing acne scars. How can i mix it with other oils? I`ve been using coconut oil and argan with great success. and your rosewater spritz is just awesome!
Rachael says
Do I take it off or leave it on once applied?
Tash says
Hi Rachael!
I leave the serum on. I tend to use a bit more overnight and just a few drops during the day.
amanda says
Is rosehip oil the same as rosehip seed oil?
Tash says
Yep! =)
