We often turn to promises of a "quick fix" when it comes to most things in our lives, including getting rid of acne. Time and time again we find ourselves falling for the next "get rid of a pimple overnight" remedy without anything to show for it. Sometimes these quick fixes leave us worse off and we wish we never tried them.
I think if done right, the right quick fixes CAN work, especially if they are made with natural, non-invasive ingredients. Cleanses are another great way to restart your system and give yourself a fresh start.
Today, I want to talk about the latest acne cleanse - the apple acne cleanse - and whether or not it's worth considering.
So, here are my thoughts!
The Apple Acne Cleanse
As some of you may have come across online, there is a lot of hype about the "apple acne cleanse" and whether or not it's effective as a natural acne treatment.
For anyone who is not familiar with this cleanse, you basically eat nothing but red delicious apples, drink nothing but water, and do daily enemas before bed to rid toxins from the body for 3 days.
So the question is, does the apple acne cleanse actually work?
My answer is, Yes!
But guess what, it's NOT wholly because of the apples. Apples themselves don't clear acne, the change in your diet does. It's what you are NOT putting into your body that makes this cleanse so effective.
And, if you're taking out a lot of processed foods, refined sugars, and other SAD (Standard American Diet) staples from your diet, it won't really matter what cleanse you are doing, you're going to see a difference and improvement in your acne.
Since I believe that all disease begins in the colon, I really like to emphasize the importance of diet and it's intimate relationship with acne. You can choose most any cleanse and be successful. Why? Because all of these cleanses and diets remove the SAME types of foods!
Which diet out there worth its weight actually says to continue eating all the junk that got you into your state of health in the first place? None of them. So, when people talk about their success with the apple acne cleanse, it's because their bodies have had the chance to remove wastes and toxins. Not to mention it utilizes the best cleansing method out there: colon cleansing enemas.
Enemas.
Not the most pleasant of experiences. I have to say though, they are the BEST way to accelerate your journey to clear skin. The reason for that is simple: enemas remove toxic build-up from the colon which allows your body to cleanse itself and effectively remove daily toxins properly...through the bowel, NOT your skin. Enemas are one of the most healing and therapeutic methods to ridding the body of many ailments including acne, fatigue, allergies, stagnant digestion, and cold and flu symptoms. They are truly amazing and I highly recommend giving them a chance to prove their worth. You'll thank me later!

Is The Apple Acne Cleanse More Effective Than Other Cleanses?
In some ways, yes.
The apple acne cleanse in particular is interesting because apples contain a lot of naturally occurring pectin, which is a source of fiber known cleanse the digestive tract. Removing built-up toxicity in the gut is one of the best ways to support your skin so I can see why apples are the star of the show.
However, there are many cleanses and diets out there to choose from, and all of the best ones include a lot of produce. So while the apple acne cleanse may be the cheapest option for achieving clear skin, there are many delicious ways to go about this 3 day cleanse.
One example would be green juice or green smoothies. Many raw foodists call this type of cleanse a juice or smoothie feast because it is a feast of vital anti-oxidants, minerals, and nutrients for the body. Doing a juice feast will be much more nutritious for you than the apple acne cleanse by itself.
You can check out my free eBook "The Ultimate Acne Cleanse- 101 Juice Recipes for Health Happiness and Clear Skin!" if you're interested in a juice cleanse to get clear fast!
Another example would be to strictly eat fruit and salads for every snack and meal, followed by an enema at the end of the day for 3 days.
Will these cleanses work just as well or better than the apple acne cleanse? You bet! The key is cutting out all the junk and refined foods you may have been consuming in favor of fresh fruits and vegetables. Regardless of the pectin content, your body WILL release wastes.
All you need is determination. By the end of 3 days, you will see a huge difference in your body's inflammation response.
But then what?
Once you finish the cleanse, it's your responsibility to make a conscious choice to eat better and change your lifestyle. Unfortunately, as soon as you start eating any of the processed foods that you were eating before the cleanse, your acne may return. This is why it's important to have a clear goal in mind and be willing to make the changes necessary to maintain your acne free skin.
What About The Castor Oil Part?
From what I've gathered from the apple acne cleanse, castor oil is applied to acne legions in order to "seal the skin" so that your body doesn't push out more toxins. This is false to some extent.
Your body will push out any toxin necessary by any means necessary whether you use castor oil or not. I believe that the remarkable anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties of castor oil are the main reasons why it is so effective against treating acne during a cleanse. However, I know that a lot of people can have a negative reaction to castor oil. So I would be wary of putting it undiluted on the skin.
If you use The Oil Cleansing Method and use castor oil in your routine, I would simply continue your routine as is. If you don't use oils to cleanse the skin, I would suggest perhaps omitting this step for fear of creating more skin issues down the road.
Will castor oil still be as effective when you aren't on a cleanse?
This is another question that pops up in regards to the apple acne cleanse, and I have to remind everyone that acne is largely an internal issue. Slapping on some castor oil in the hopes that it will get rid of your acne for good just isn't how it really works.
Clearing the skin deeply depends on diet, so when you are doing something like the apple acne cleanse, you are eliminating all foods that cause inflammation which would help the castor oil to really do its magic. The cleaner the diet, the better your results will be. Just remember that castor oil isn't the best oil to use on the skin for most people.
Eliminating the acne causing foods will be the fastest way to clear skin.
However, if you need dramatic results for a date or special occasion, I recommend giving these cleanse a try (sans castor oil) to see for yourself the healing power of simple, fresh, and nourishing food.

Hey. If I skip the enema, how many days will it take to clear up my acne? I have very mild acne with 6-7 pimples.
Tash says
Hi Tysons!
Without the enemas is may take a while longer and really depends on the severity of your acne. I would say anywhere from one week to several weeks depending on how good you are with eating clean and staying hydrated.
Annie says
Would this cleanse still be effective without enemas? I don't know how I feel about them yet... Haha
Tash says
Hi Annie!
You can certainly do the cleanse without enemas 🙂 They are just a means get cleansed faster in a way, and I'm not going to lie, they aren't the most pleasant things in the world but they do make a difference! I would focus on very clean eating after the cleanse for about a week to help your body release toxins through the colon. Same thing as an enema in a way!
